Hannover Re has been successfully trading in Canada since first obtaining its licence on December 19th, 1980. Over this period of time, we have established ourselves as a leading reinsurer in the Canadian market and we support a broad swathe of the insurance industry with their reinsurance needs.

The expertise that resides within Hannover Re, for all lines of property & casualty business, is made available to our intermediaries and clients as we strive to solve their reinsurance challenges.

Our office in downtown Toronto is responsible for all standard treaty and all facultative property and casualty business written in Canada. We are also able to offer the expertise of our credit and surety, political risk, marine and aviation, as well as our structured reinsurance specialists. Additionally, Hannover Re is an important provider of catastrophe coverage to the Canadian market. This capability is underpinned by our licensed status, which provides added comfort to our clients.

Oversight of the Canadian Branch is warranted through the coordinating market department (CMD) in Hannover, headed by the General Manager Frank Rückert, whom Laurel Grant reports to.

As a local property & casualty treaty team we have excellent connections on the ground and with our strong rating and longstanding relations in the market, we are a reinsurance partner to almost all Canadian insurers – from the smallest local mutual to the largest Canadian players.

Our local facultative operation provides a broad range of standard and specialty property and liability coverages as well as specialised policies developed to meet the particular needs of individual industries.

We underwrite through a variety of channels in the Canadian market, either through our direct network with renowned local underwriters or worldwide intermediaries. We are able to accommodate US and worldwide exposures while maintaining an average turn-around time of less than 48 hours.

It is our aim to offer our clients tailor-made facultative reinsurance solutions for their unique requirements and for all classes where coverage is needed. We take great pride in providing efficient services to our clients while cultivating long-term relationships.

In addition to our professional underwriting, our back office functions form a fundamental part of the department. From accounting to legal and claims, our team, supported by our experts in Hannover, carries the highest level of expertise to the benefit of our business partners.
